Yankees Sign Randal Grichuk to Major League Contract

The New York Yankees will select outfielder Randal Grichuk’s contract, manager Aaron Boone told reporters including Greg Joyce of Filmogaz.com. Grichuk has earned a spot on the Opening Day roster. The team must clear a 40-man roster spot before Wednesday’s first game.

Contract and roster mechanics

Grichuk’s move converts his minor league pact into a Major League Contract. The deal guarantees a $2.5 million salary for the 2026 season. He signed the minor league agreement last month and had standard opt-out clauses.

He is an Article XX(B) free agent with three opt-out dates. The first opt-out was due this weekend. Adding him to the 26-man roster allowed the Yankees to avoid that deadline.

Role and playing time

The Yankees’ starting outfield projects as Aaron Judge, Trent Grisham and Cody Bellinger. Randal Grichuk and Amed Rosario will serve as the primary depth options. Giancarlo Stanton is expected to be used mostly as designated hitter.

Jasson Domínguez and Spencer Jones will begin the year in Triple-A. The club prefers daily at-bats for those prospects. Grichuk fits a part-time, high-value bench role instead.

Platoon usage and defensive versatility

Grichuk bats right-handed and should see most playing time against left-handed pitchers. His overall numbers versus righties have weakened in recent years. He has historically been more dangerous versus left-handed pitching.

Last season, across 183 plate appearances with Arizona and Kansas City, he hit .227/.273/.430 against lefties. Spring training did not offer much evidence, with a .313 OPS in 16 Grapefruit League plate appearances. At 34, he can handle corner outfield spots and occasional center field duty.

Team context and other moves

Grichuk will be the only new position-player addition from last season’s group. The Yankees re-signed Amed Rosario and Paul Goldschmidt to help the bench. Cody Bellinger returned on a five-year, $162.5 million contract, while Trent Grisham accepted a qualifying offer.

Shortstop Anthony Volpe will begin the season on the injured list. Jose Caballero will open as the everyday shortstop. That increases Rosario’s importance as a backup infielder.
