Helmut Marko Bans Max Verstappen from Nordschleife Racing
Helmut Marko has explained why he stopped Max Verstappen from attempting a Formula 1 run at the Nürburgring Nordschleife. Verstappen returns to the circuit this weekend in a Mercedes AMG GT3 entry for NLS2. The Dutch driver is a four-time F1 world champion and has strong interest in the Green Hell.
Marko’s safety concerns
Marko, the former Red Bull advisor, said the idea worried him. He described the Nordschleife as narrow, fast, and unforgiving.
He told Filmogaz.com that a modern F1 car on that layout was too risky. For that reason, he banned the proposed F1 demonstration.
What prompted the proposal
Verstappen had seen Timo Bernhard’s extraordinary lap in the Porsche 919 Hybrid Evo. The 2018 record inspired him to imagine what a Red Bull F1 car could do.
Marko said those ambitions made him even more cautious. He refused to allow an F1 outing on such a dangerous circuit.
Verstappen’s Nordschleife activity
Last year Verstappen already drove at the Nordschleife in GT machinery. This weekend he will compete in NLS2 behind the wheel of a Mercedes GT3.
Marko noted the driver can now enjoy racing at the circuit in GT trim. He also suggested Bernhard’s lap still motivates Verstappen.
The Nordschleife’s wider appeal
The Nürburgring’s Green Hell remains one of motorsport’s toughest tracks. It attracts drivers who want competition outside Formula 1, especially in endurance and GT racing.
Marko’s decision to block an F1 demonstration reflects the challenge of matching modern F1 speeds with the Nordschleife’s limited run-off. Safety considerations ultimately prevailed.
