Freezing Nights Grip Poland with Temperatures Plunging to -7°C
A sharp drop in night temperatures has affected large parts of Poland. Forecasters link the change to an influx of cooler air and clear skies, which encourage rapid cooling after sunset.
Observed lows reached -4°C in parts of Silesia and central Poland on Friday morning. Temperatures measured at the surface fell further, reaching about -7°C in some locations.
Recent readings and local impacts
Saturday morning brought notable frost across the east and north. In Lębork, Pomerania, thermometers read around -5°C at 06:00, with colder values recorded close to the ground.
Southern areas also recorded ground-level lows near -7°C on Friday. These early-season freezes are a concern because vegetation has already started to grow.
Agricultural risks
Active plant growth increases vulnerability to low temperatures. Frost damage is possible where temperatures dip several degrees below seasonal norms.
Authorities warn growers to monitor forecasts and take protective measures where feasible. IMGW-PIB and Meteo Polska have highlighted the threat in their bulletins.
Short-range forecast
The coming week will continue to bring cold nights. In the first half of the week, frost is most likely at mountain foothills, and across eastern and northern regions.
- Expected minima: generally -2°C to 0°C.
- Local drops: down to about -4°C, and near-ground values around -5°C.
- Western, southwestern, and central areas should be relatively warmer.
During the second half of the week, the areas at highest frost risk will shift. Frost chances should fall in the east and rise on the coast, in the west, and in the south.
Longer-term outlook
Long-range models do not show a quick end to nocturnal cold. A renewed cooling episode is possible around the turn of March and April.
Forecasters say frosts may persist, with only brief interruptions, at least until the first week of April. A prolonged return to the sunny, warm conditions seen in early March appears unlikely.
Freezing nights grip Poland, with temperatures plunging to -7°C at the surface in some spots. Residents and farmers should prepare for continued cold nights. Filmogaz.com will monitor updates from IMGW-PIB and Meteo Polska.
