Marwell Zoo Seeks Public’s Help to Find Escaped Capybara, Samba

Marwell Zoo has asked local residents to be vigilant after a capybara named Samba left its enclosure earlier this week. Staff say the animal remains missing despite an extensive search.

Escape and sightings

Samba arrived at the zoo on Monday with another female capybara called Tango. Both came from Jimmy’s Farm & Wildlife Park in Suffolk.

They were placed in a temporary holding area. Both animals escaped the enclosure on Tuesday.

Zookeepers quickly found and secured Tango. Samba proved more elusive and avoided capture.

The most recent confirmed sighting was in the village of Owslebury. That location is just over two miles from the zoo and was reported on Wednesday evening.

Zoo response

The team sealed off the area where the animals escaped. Staff and local partners searched the grounds and surrounding countryside.

Local authorities were notified under the conditions of the zoo’s licence. The zoo says animal welfare is its highest priority.

Public guidance

Capybaras are intelligent and gentle animals. The zoo says they pose no threat to people.

However, members of the public should not approach Samba. Do not try to capture her under any circumstances.

People walking or driving in the area should be extra observant. Check ponds and other waterways, as capybaras favour water.
