Plan Ahead: Major Piccadilly, Elizabeth Line Closures Impact Weekend Travel
London residents and visitors should expect significant rail disruption on the weekend of March 21-22, 2026. Major closures will affect multiple London Underground and Overground routes.
Planned closures and affected lines
This weekend will see wide-ranging suspensions across the network. Recent weeks have already included closures at Liverpool Street and partial shutdowns on several Tube lines.
- Piccadilly line: no trains between Cockfosters and Uxbridge on March 21 and 22.
- Elizabeth line: extensive suspensions and reduced services on both days.
- Weaver line (Overground): no services between Liverpool Street and Cheshunt, Chingford, and Enfield Town.
- Liberty line (Overground): entire line closed on March 21 and 22.
- Liverpool Street station: closed for both days.
Elizabeth line specifics
On Saturday, March 21, there will be no trains between Whitechapel and Shenfield. On Sunday, March 22, there will be no service from Ealing Broadway to Shenfield and Abbey Wood until 7.45am.
After 7.45am on Sunday, a reduced service will run between Paddington and Maidenhead or Heathrow. Services will not run between Paddington and Shenfield or Abbey Wood that day.
Replacement services and alternatives
Replacement buses will cover several suspended rail links. Passengers should allow extra journey time and check updated timetables.
- Elizabeth line: replacement buses between Stratford and Romford, and between Newbury Park and Shenfield.
- Weaver Overground: buses will run between Seven Sisters and Enfield Town or Cheshunt, and between Hackney Downs and Chingford.
Travel advice
Plan ahead: Major Piccadilly and Elizabeth Line closures will impact weekend travel. Expect longer journeys and busier alternative routes.
Next week’s planned tube strikes have been called off. Still, check TfL updates before travel and allow extra time for connections.
Things to do despite disruption
London offers many events this weekend for those who can travel. Museums, festivals and theatre are still open.
- Serpentine: new free exhibition by David Hockney.
- BFI Flare: film programme and screenings across the city.
- London Eid Fest: cultural events and food markets.
- National Theatre: large-scale production of Summerfolk.
