Iran Launches Historic 4,000 km Missile Strike on Diego Garcia
Iran launched long-range ballistic missiles toward Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean. Reports say the strike covered roughly 4,000 km.
Missile launch and interception
Two missiles headed for the British-run base were reported on Friday. One failed in flight and did not complete its trajectory.
Another missile was intercepted by a US SM-3 missile defense system. Officials said neither weapon struck the base.
Explosions and damage inside Iran
Multiple blasts were heard across several Iranian cities on Friday. Reports mentioned a fire at Bandar Lengeh port.
The towns and cities affected included Tehran, Bandar Abbas, Isfahan, Yazd, Bardsir, Baft, Kerman and Arak. Local authorities reported the incidents.
US aircraft incident
The Pentagon confirmed a US F-35 made an emergency landing at a US airbase in the Middle East. Sources speaking to CNN said Iranian fire may have struck the aircraft.
US political reaction
Former President Donald Trump criticized NATO allies for limited support in reopening the Strait of Hormuz. He said, “Without the U.S.A., NATO is a paper tiger.”
He also stated there is no longer a leader in Iran with whom to negotiate. Trump added the US is “very close” to meeting campaign objectives against Iran.
