Sunny Weekend Ahead, Snow Risk Looms with Next Week’s Cold Snap
The UK will enjoy more pleasant weather this weekend. Days have been longer than nights since Friday’s spring equinox.
High pressure is keeping conditions settled. Southern and eastern areas should see plenty of sunshine and mild temperatures.
Weekend forecast
Temperatures are likely to reach about 14C across many parts. That is cooler than the near-20C peak recorded on Wednesday.
Mornings may start misty or foggy, especially in the south east. Expect a delay before sunshine clears low cloud.
Change expected next week
The Met Office warns of a shift to colder, more unsettled conditions next week. A cold front is due to move south on Tuesday night into Wednesday.
That front could bring snow and wintry showers across northern and western areas. Icy patches and overnight frost are also possible.
Why temperatures will fall
Wind direction is the main factor. This week’s warm southeasterly flow drew mild air from the near continent.
Over the weekend winds will veer more southwesterly, bringing cooler air. Behind the cold front winds will turn northerly, drawing Arctic air south.
Who faces the greatest snow risk
Scotland, Northern Ireland and northern England are most at risk, particularly on higher ground. Further south, brief wintry showers or icy patches remain possible.
Widespread heavy snow across the UK would be unusual late in March. However, scattered snow on higher ground at this time of year is not unheard of.
Historical note
The latest recorded UK snowfall occurred on June 2, 1975. Glenmore Lodge in Scotland reported 16cm, and snow showers even disrupted cricket in Essex.
Practical advice
Enjoy the sunny weekend while it lasts. There is a snow risk with next week’s cold snap, so keep winter layers handy.
