Dabo Swinney Accepts Responsibility for Clemson Football’s Disappointing Season

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney told the ACC Network he accepts responsibility for the program’s disappointing season. He made the comments during an appearance with Andrea Adelson and David Hale.

Swinney’s accountability

Swinney said the team failed to win close games and finish in the fourth quarter. He added that coaching decisions and personnel moves are ultimately his responsibility.

He acknowledged needing to be better in key moments. Swinney said that applies to both players and staff.

Season results

The Tigers finished 7-6 for the 2025 season. The year ended with a 22-10 loss to Penn State in the Pinstripe Bowl.

Clemson began the year ranked No. 4 in the preseason AP Poll. The final record marked the program’s second-worst season under Swinney, behind only the 2010 team that went 6-7.

Program legacy

College Football Playoff history

Clemson has reached the College Football Playoff seven times under Swinney. That total ties Ohio State and trails Alabama’s nine appearances.

The Tigers own the record for consecutive CFP trips, with six straight appearances from 2015 through 2020. Clemson played in four national title games and won championships in 2016 and 2018.

During that run, Clemson finished inside the CFP final Top 5 each year. The program has six CFP wins, behind only Alabama and Ohio State.

Recent trends

The Tigers have made the playoff once since 2020. That appearance came in 2024, with an opening-round loss at Texas in the inaugural 12-team format.

Clemson failed to reach 10 wins in two of the past three seasons. The program had recorded double-digit victories every year from 2011 through 2022.

Looking ahead

Swinney said the program’s culture remains strong and that football issues can be fixed. He emphasized returning to basics and improving personnel and decisions.

He also pushed back on outside criticism, saying many critics do not truly know him. Swinney said he will focus on work and results going forward.
