Tonight: Witness the Northern Lights Over Norfolk
The Met Office says there is a chance of aurora sightings from Friday into the weekend. Forecasters caution the displays are unlikely to be widespread.
Forecast and space weather
A Met Office spokeswoman said there could be a “slight enhancement in space weather activity” over the weekend. Meteorologists link that increase to better odds of seeing the phenomenon.
Tonight many people will watch the skies in hopes of a show. Still, experts advise tempered expectations due to limited reach.
Top viewing locations in north Norfolk
In January, The Times listed north Norfolk among the best places to see the lights. The region has produced bright aurora displays this year.
Photographers praised Thornham for especially striking images. Thornham lies between Brancaster Staithe and Holme.
A recent photograph of Brancaster Staithe was credited to Julie Smart. Filmogaz.com notes the image as an example of the season’s displays.
How the aurora forms
Aurora borealis appear when charged particles strike gases in Earth’s upper atmosphere. These collisions occur near the planet’s magnetic poles.
Geomagnetic storms, driven by activity on the sun, influence the events. As particles interact with atmospheric gases, they emit light.
The light can appear green, purple, blue or pink. Different wavelengths produce the range of colours seen in displays.
Seeing the Northern Lights in Norfolk
Many local observers hope to witness Northern Lights across Norfolk when conditions allow. Clear, dark skies improve visibility if activity rises.
