Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans Reunite for Avengers Moment at the Oscars
Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans reunited on the Oscars stage Sunday in a playful Avengers moment. They presented the adapted and original screenplay awards to open their onstage bit.
Onstage gags and gifts
Downey began by praising writers before being interrupted by Evans with a personal question. Evans asked what Downey had given him for the 14th anniversary of The Avengers.
Evans gifted a signed copy of the Avengers script, and Downey offered a valet receipt instead. They then handed the adapted screenplay Oscar to Paul Thomas Anderson for One Battle After Another.
Unexpected props and reactions
When announcing original screenplay nominees, Downey produced sparkly underwear worn by Channing Tatum in Magic Mike. A startled Tatum shouted that he would need the garment later for work.
The original screenplay award went to Sinners writer Ryan Coogler. The exchange completed a lighthearted presentation that mixed humor and homage.
Costume nods to comic-book roles
Their suits contained subtle callbacks to their MCU roles. Downey wore a dark green jacket reminiscent of Doctor Doom.
Evans appeared in dark blue, echoing Captain America’s palette. The color choices drew audible reaction from the audience.
From Endgame to Doomsday
Both actors rose to fame as Iron Man and Captain America. They stepped away from the franchise after 2019’s Avengers: Endgame.
Tony Stark sacrificed himself to stop Thanos, and Steve Rogers retired with Peggy Carter. Still, Marvel routinely brings characters back in new arcs.
Downey will return as the major villain Doctor Doom in Doomsday. That appearance was teased in the post-credits scene of Fantastic Four: First Steps.
Reports suggest his character may be an Iron Man variant from another universe. Evans was absent from the initial Doomsday casting list.
A teaser late last year confirmed his return and launched a year-long countdown. The announcement renewed excitement about a new Avengers chapter.
