BMW i3 Launches Soon as Another EV Exits Market

BMW is preparing to introduce a new i3 model later this year while removing another electric vehicle from its lineup. The automaker confirmed the i4 Gran Coupe will end after the 2026 model year. The move reflects BMW’s broader transition to its Neue Klasse electric architecture.

New i3: technology and timing

The new i3 uses BMW’s sixth-generation eDrive and an 800-volt electrical architecture. BMW says this setup yields noticeably longer range and faster charging. Production is set to begin at BMW’s Munich plant this summer, with customer deliveries planned for autumn.

BMW estimates the i3 can reach about 440 miles on a single charge under one testing regime. Under WLTP conditions, BMW cites up to 900 km, roughly 559 miles. The sedan will support up to 400 kW DC fast charging. At that speed, it can recover nearly 250 miles, or about 440 km, in roughly 10 minutes.

Pricing details are still pending. Analysts expect the new i3 to start near $50,000 to $55,000. For comparison, the iX3 50 xDrive is listed near $60,000 and will go on sale this summer.

i4 phase-out and possible successor

BMW launched the i4 in 2021, with European deliveries beginning later that year. U.S. deliveries followed in early 2022. The i4 was one of BMW’s first mass-market electric models alongside the iX.

A BMW spokesperson told Car and Driver that the 2026 model year will mark the i4’s final run. The 2026 i4 eDrive40 is priced from $57,900. BMW notes the new i3 is similar in size to the i4, which helps explain the decision to retire the Gran Coupe.

BMW’s senior vice president of product management said there may be room for a sportier, coupe-like replacement. No official details or timelines were provided.

Neue Klasse impact and other models

BMW’s Neue Klasse vehicles promise significant performance gains. BMW claims up to 30% more driving range and roughly 30% faster charging versus the current i4. The iX3 is another Neue Klasse model arriving this year.

A new iX4 coupe crossover is also expected later this year. Leaked materials indicate a 2027 iX4 could be offered in 40 xDrive and 50 xDrive versions.

Inventory moves and incentives

To clear space for Neue Klasse models, BMW is offering incentives on its current EV inventory. Discounts can total up to $12,500 when combined with low financing rates. Buyers can check local offers to see available deals.
