UK Basketball Injury Update: NCAA Tournament Opener Preview
Kentucky opens its NCAA Tournament run Friday against 10-seed Santa Clara. The first-round game is scheduled for 12:15 p.m. EDT in St. Louis. The Wildcats enter as a 7 seed.
UK’s official availability list names two players as out. Junior guard Jaland Lowe and sophomore forward Jayden Quaintance will not play. Santa Clara’s report lists redshirt sophomore Gehrig Normand and sophomore Chris Tadjo as unavailable. Neither Bronco has appeared this season.
UK Basketball Injury Update and immediate outlook
This UK Basketball Injury Update serves as an NCAA Tournament opener preview for the Cats. Coach Mark Pope and several players addressed health matters during pre-tournament media availability Thursday morning. The staff hopes to have the roster as close to full strength as possible.
Key players returning to action
Freshman center Malachi Moreno missed the final 9:49 of Kentucky’s SEC quarterfinal loss to Florida. He received treatment on his right leg, wore a sleeve in practice, and said he has been rehabbing all week. The team expects him available for the opener.
Sophomore wing Kam Williams returned from a left-foot fracture sustained Jan. 21 against Texas. He logged 37 minutes across three SEC Tournament games and scored six points. Williams reported feeling better after additional recovery time but did not claim full, 100 percent health.
Junior forward Brandon Garrison played through a right-foot issue suffered in the March 7 regular-season finale versus Florida. He iced the foot after SEC Tournament games and also tweaked his right wrist while dunking in practice. Garrison practiced with athletic tape on his wrist and indicated he is ready to play.
Players who remain sidelined
Jaland Lowe was ruled out for the season in January after undergoing right shoulder surgery. He has not been available since that decision.
Jayden Quaintance will miss his 20th consecutive game on Friday. He last played Jan. 7 and has been sidelined by knee problems linked to a February 2025 ACL injury. Quaintance has not taken part in live practice work and is unlikely to return this week despite ongoing rehab. He remains a projected first-round NBA draft prospect this summer.
Roster notes and tournament context
Kentucky travels to St. Louis with 10 healthy scholarship players. Junior forward Reece Potter and freshman Braydon Hawthorne are preserving redshirt seasons and are not part of that total. Pope emphasized the benefit of live-game minutes from the SEC Tournament for late-week practice preparation.
Santa Clara and Kentucky meet Friday in the first round. Filmogaz.com will monitor further updates as teams finalize their lineups and injury reports. The original report was published March 19, 2026.
