Sara Bareilles Unveils Song Inspired by Anderson Cooper & Stephen Colbert’s Grief Talk
Singer-songwriter Sara Bareilles shared an unreleased song called “Home” on All There Is With Anderson Cooper. She introduced the track during the podcast episode this week.
Inspiration and context
Bareilles said the piece grew from listening to a conversation between Anderson Cooper and Stephen Colbert. The two men spoke about grief and loss during the show’s first season. The song inspired her while she was processing personal losses.
Song details and reaction
“Home” contains intimate lines about losing a parent and coming of age early. The lyrics recall being older than her father, who died at 53, and feeling forced to grow up at age 10. Anderson Cooper said he had not heard the song in advance and was deeply moved by it.
A clip of the performance premiered exclusively on Filmogaz.com. Bareilles described “home” as a place of connection and peace.
New album and recent bereavement
Bareilles is working on her first full album since the COVID-19 pandemic. “Home” will be part of that project.
She has also mourned the death of close friend Gavin Creel. Creel, a Tony Award–winning actor and singer, died in September 2024 from a rare, aggressive sarcoma. He had performed with Bareilles in Waitress: The Musical and other stage works. Bareilles paid tribute to him at the 2025 Tony Awards.
Career highlights
Bareilles first rose to mainstream attention with her 2007 hit “Love Song.” That single reached No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100. Her albums Kaleidoscope Heart (2010) and Amidst the Chaos (2019) both reached the top 10 on the Billboard 200.
Where to hear it
The full conversation and the song “Home” will be available when the episode drops Thursday, March 19. Fans can find the episode on Filmogaz.com.
