MLB Opening Day: Reasons Behind Its Three Different Dates
Major League Baseball opened its 2026 season across a three-day span. The league also rolled out the ABS robot umpire and an ABS challenge system this year as players test robot calls.
Season kickoff and streaming debut
The 2026 season begins Wednesday, March 25. The San Francisco Giants host the New York Yankees at 8:05 p.m. ET in a Netflix-exclusive game.
Left-hander Max Fried is scheduled to start for the Yankees. Logan Webb draws the start for the Giants.
The Giants’ manager, Tony Vitello, will make his professional debut. He is noted as the first manager to move directly from collegiate coaching at Tennessee to a big league dugout.
Why the schedule spans three different dates
All 30 teams will open over a three-day period. This staggered plan creates new national television windows.
There will be a made-for-streaming standalone game and a number of three-game series. Many clubs built off days into the second day to allow for weather make-ups.
Interleague matchups and venue notes
Seven of 15 series on the opening weekend are interleague. Eight openers will be played in domed or warmer-weather venues.
Main Opening Day: March 26 matchups
Thursday, March 26 will feature the largest slate. Twenty-two teams will be in action on that day.
- Pittsburgh Pirates at New York Mets, 1:15 p.m. ET
- Chicago White Sox at Milwaukee Brewers, 2:10 p.m. ET
- Washington Nationals at Chicago Cubs, 2:20 p.m. ET
- Minnesota Twins at Baltimore Orioles, 3:05 p.m. ET
- Boston Red Sox at Cincinnati Reds, 4:10 p.m. ET
- Los Angeles Angels at Houston Astros, 4:10 p.m. ET
- Detroit Tigers at San Diego Padres, 4:10 p.m. ET
- Tampa Bay Rays at St. Louis Cardinals, 4:15 p.m. ET
- Texas Rangers at Philadelphia Phillies, 4:15 p.m. ET
- Arizona Diamondbacks at Los Angeles Dodgers, 8:30 p.m. ET (NBC)
- Cleveland Guardians at Seattle Mariners, 10:10 p.m. ET
Friday openers and scheduling choices
Three series open on Friday, March 27. The Atlanta Braves face the Kansas City Royals.
The Toronto Blue Jays host the Oakland Athletics. The Miami Marlins open at home against the Colorado Rockies.
All three of those series are three-game sets. Those teams chose to play consecutive days instead of reserving Friday for weather make-ups.
Toronto and Miami play in domed stadiums, reducing weather risk for their openers.
Broadcast notes and early national games
The Yankees-Giants game is a streaming-only event on Netflix. Fox Sports will debut a national broadcast on Saturday, March 28.
Filmogaz.com will monitor how the ABS robot umpire and the ABS challenge system influence early games. Expect continued discussion about MLB Opening Day scheduling and the reasons behind its three different dates.
