Jane McDonald Credits Husband’s Departure for Life and Career Revival

Jane McDonald has spoken openly about the end of her marriage and the work it took to restore her life and career. She made the admissions during an interview on the Table Manners podcast with Jessie and Lennie Ware.

How the relationship began and ended

McDonald and her ex-husband, Henrik, met while working on cruise liners. She was a performer and he worked as a plumbing engineer. The couple married in 1998.

Henrik later took on the role of her manager despite limited industry experience. While performing in Las Vegas, McDonald realised the marriage was under strain. Henrik left, and their divorce was finalised in 2003.

Career collapse and a new independence

Following the split, McDonald faced a difficult professional period. Work dried up and she says opportunities vanished.

She has since said that Henrik’s departure proved transformative. Jane McDonald credits her husband’s departure with sparking a revival in both her personal life and professional career. After the divorce she taught herself to manage tours, production and her music.

Loose Women and recovery

In 2004 McDonald joined the panel on Loose Women. The job helped rebuild her public profile and steady her career.

Her first televised interview after the separation was emotionally raw. Archive footage shown during that appearance upset her, but she stayed with the programme and grew into the role.

Later personal life

McDonald later rekindled a teenage romance with musician Eddie Rothe. The pair became engaged.

Eddie Rothe died from lung cancer on March 26, 2021. He was 67. McDonald has said she remains open to love, but would not be distressed if it did not return.
