Montana Health Officials Advise RSV Vaccinations for Infants Until April 2026

Montana health officials have extended the period for preventive RSV immunizations for the state’s youngest children. The Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services now recommends offering protection through April 30, 2026.

Reason for the extension

RSV activity in Montana is rising and it is spreading later than in past seasons. The state followed Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidance when updating its recommendation.

Respiratory syncytial virus remains the leading cause of infant hospitalizations nationwide. Health leaders said current infection trends warrant additional time for preventive measures.

Who should be offered immunization

  • Infants younger than 8 months who have not received immunization this season.
  • Infants whose mothers did not receive the RSV vaccine during pregnancy.
  • Infants whose mothers’ vaccination status is unknown.
  • Babies born within 14 days after their mother received the vaccine.

Timing for newborns

Newborns in the first week of life should ideally receive the antibody dose in the hospital. Providers can also give the dose at any routine health visit.

Older infants at increased risk

Children ages 8 to 19 months in their second RSV season may be eligible if they face higher risk. Providers should consider these conditions when deciding on immunization.

  • Premature infants with chronic lung disease.
  • Children with weakened immune systems.
  • Children with certain cystic fibrosis-related complications.
  • American Indian or Alaska Native children.

Advice for caregivers

Caregivers are urged to speak promptly with their child’s pediatrician about eligibility. Early discussion helps determine whether RSV vaccinations are appropriate.
