Explore ‘Ellis’ Filming Sites: Channel 5 Locations Unveiled
Channel 5’s crime drama returns with a second four-part season centred on DCI Ellis. Sharon D. Clarke leads the cast as the titular investigator.
The new run tackles two cases. The first follows the murder of businessman Peter Barron in fictional Ashenham. The second examines the death of student Abi Marshall in fictional Elmsly.
Production choice and setting
Although the story is set in the North of England, filming took place in Northern Ireland. The production moved between towns to reflect the show’s itinerant policing format.
Sharon D. Clarke told Filmogaz.com that the series places Ellis in different communities. Andrew Gower, who plays DS Harper, praised Northern Ireland’s scenery and film infrastructure.

Explore ‘Ellis’ filming sites across Northern Ireland as Channel 5 locations unveiled to viewers. The landscapes became stand-ins for the fictional villages.
Glenarm — Ashenham
Glenarm doubled for the village of Ashenham. Slemish Mountain appears prominently in several exterior shots.
Clarke described hiking Slemish as tough but rewarding. She noted dramatic weather and vivid green vistas observed on set.
Downpatrick — Elmsly
Downpatrick supplied many of the Elmsly backdrops. The town’s brick buildings hosted police station scenes.
Scenes set in the Quinn family home were also filmed there. Viewers may recognise the town’s compact streets and period architecture.
Drumaness — Abi Marshall’s home and memorial
Drumaness doubled for Abi Marshall’s residence and her memorial site. The location is an old mill settlement with preserved street scenes.
Drumaness was previously used by another major crime drama in 2019. That series was Dublin Murders.
Final notes
The second series concluded as a tightly plotted four-parter. Fans interested in locations can visit the Northern Irish towns that stood in for Ashenham and Elmsly.
