London’s Major Road Closure Warns Drivers of Month-Long Disruption
Transport for London has announced a major road closure on the A40. The works affect the two-and-a-half-mile section between the Westway roundabout and the Marylebone flyover.
Work scope and schedule
The elevated dual carriageway will close from Friday until late April. Crews will replace two expansion joints that allow the structure to expand and contract safely.
TfL said it reviewed several options. It concluded a full multi-week closure is the quickest and safest way to complete the work.
Traffic impact and congestion data
The A40 carries up to 96,000 vehicles a day. Transport analytics firm Inrix named a nearby stretch of the A40 London’s most congested corridor in 2024.
Drivers who used the route at 5pm were estimated to have spent 68 hours a year sitting in traffic. TfL acknowledged the closure will create significant disruption for road users.
Management, diversions and advice to drivers
A comprehensive traffic signal strategy will be deployed to keep traffic moving. Diversion routes will be signposted, but journeys are likely to be delayed.
TfL urged people to plan ahead and to use alternative modes where possible. Stuart Harvey, TfL’s chief capital officer, stressed the need to maintain the flyover for the tens of thousands who rely on it.
- Plan journeys in advance.
- Allow extra travel time.
- Use public transport where feasible.
- Follow diversion signs on site.
