Trump Praises Japanese Leader, Lauds Tokyo’s Efforts on Iran Issue

U.S. President Donald Trump met Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi at the White House on March 19, 2026. The Oval Office meeting focused on the Middle East, energy security and defence cooperation.

Trump praised Japan’s leader during the visit. He said Tokyo was stepping up amid tensions involving Iran.

Talks in Washington

The leaders discussed ways to stabilise global energy markets. The meeting came as the Strait of Hormuz faced disruptions tied to the Iran conflict.

Trump said the United States had received limited support from some allies. He nevertheless asked for increased maritime efforts to protect shipping.

Joint international statement

Before the bilateral meeting, Japan joined major European nations in a joint statement. The statement pledged steps to steady energy supplies.

It said those countries were ready to join “appropriate efforts” to ensure safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz.

Japan’s diplomatic and security role

Takaichi stressed that Iran must never obtain a nuclear weapon. She presented proposals aimed at calming energy markets.

Japan retains diplomatic ties with Tehran. Officials said Tokyo has been communicating with Iran and could offer a diplomatic channel.

Tokyo’s earlier mediation attempt in 2019 did not succeed. Still, officials see diplomatic outreach as a potential path amid the conflict.

Military and maritime capabilities

The U.S. pressed allies for naval support to clear mines and escort tankers. Washington noted Japan’s navy has strong minesweeping and detection assets.

Treasury officials expected Japan to act to protect its crude oil supplies. Japan depends heavily on Gulf oil for its energy needs.

Defence cooperation and munitions

Washington is likely to request help replacing depleted U.S. munitions. Trump may ask Tokyo to co-develop or produce missiles.

Tokyo is considering the request. Officials said discussions will weigh Japan’s constitutional limits and domestic public opinion.

Japan also intends to join the “Golden Dome” missile defence initiative. The programme aims to detect and track threats from orbit.

Economic pledges and investment

Takaichi is expected to announce fresh Japanese investment in U.S. projects. Earlier, Tokyo offered a $550 billion commitment to secure tariff relief.

Japan already committed $36 billion across three projects. A second tranche could include about $60 billion in investments in minerals and energy.

China and Taiwan concerns

Takaichi hopes to remind Trump of security risks posed by an assertive China. She has signalled stronger support for Taiwan in past remarks.

U.S. intelligence called her previous Taiwan remarks a “significant shift.” Tokyo disputed that assessment and said its stance follows long-standing policy.

The prime minister said Japan remains open to dialogue with Beijing.
