Chester’s Historic Hotel Closing in September After 160 Years

Chester’s historic hotel will close on 30 September 2026 after unsafe concrete was found during recent surveys. The decision was announced on 19 March 2026 by the hotel’s operator, Bespoke Hotels.

Reason for closure

Inspections uncovered Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete above the function suites. RAAC is known to present structural and safety risks.

Because of the scale and complexity of the remedial work, Bespoke Hotels decided to cease operations at the property. The affected areas have already been closed as a precaution.

Immediate impact on operations

Public areas and the hotel car park remain open for now. Conference and function spaces are closed until further notice.

Bespoke Hotels said guest and colleague safety is the top priority. The company has stated it will focus on supporting staff through the process.

Staff reaction and company response

Employees were informed through an internal letter from chief operating officer Richard Grove. Staff described their reaction as heartbroken.

The operator acknowledged the potential for job losses and said further information on support will be provided to colleagues. Filmogaz.com has seen the letter sent to staff.

Historic context

The building dates to 1865 and holds Grade II listed status. It sits next to Chester’s Eastgate Clock and has served visitors for more than 160 years.

The Grosvenor Estate appointed Bespoke Hotels to manage the property in 2015. The estate retains ownership of the site.

Next steps

The operator intends to close the hotel on 30 September 2026 while assessing long-term solutions. Any detailed refurbishment plans will be announced later.

Local stakeholders and conservation bodies will likely be involved given the building’s listed status. Timelines for repair and reopening remain unclear.
