Vikings Re-sign Carson Wentz: Analyzing His Role in New QB Depth Chart

The Minnesota Vikings announced March 19 they re-signed Carson Wentz to a one-year contract. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Wentz served as the Vikings’ top backup in 2025 behind J.J. McCarthy. He made five starts and went 2-3.

2025 performance and injury

He completed 65.1% of his passes for 1,216 yards. Wentz threw six touchdowns and five interceptions during those starts.

Wentz played through a shoulder dislocation before the injury ended his season. Minnesota still opted to bring him back for 2026.

Career snapshot

Wentz was the No. 2 overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft by the Philadelphia Eagles. He rose quickly and posted an 11-2 mark across 13 starts in 2017.

He finished third in MVP voting that season. Philadelphia replaced him with Jalen Hurts late in 2020.

After leaving Philadelphia, Wentz played for six different teams over six years. His career record stands at 49-49-1 across 99 starts.

Where he fits in Minnesota

With the Vikings re-sign Carson Wentz, Minnesota adds veteran depth to its quarterback room. Analyzing his role in the new QB depth chart places him as an experienced third-string option.

Kyler Murray and J.J. McCarthy are expected to compete for the starting job. Max Brosmer, a 2025 undrafted free agent, will also vie for a roster spot.
