Rivian Unveils Global R2 EV Featuring Innovative Cost-Cutting Strategy
Rivian is launching a compact electric vehicle aimed at global markets. The automaker trimmed costs by standardizing hardware across regions.
Unified connectivity and cost reductions
The R2 uses identical internet hardware in every market. That lowers parts complexity and reduces manufacturing costs.
Each car supports 5G for over-the-air updates and smartphone remote commands. Software then adapts the connection for regional needs.
eSIM and the SGP.32 standard
Rivian adopted the GSMA SGP.32 eSIM standard for its connectivity. The standard targets IoT use and enables bulk remote profile management.
This setup lets the company provision, switch, or delete carrier profiles remotely. Owners will not need service visits for carrier changes.
Partnering with Giesecke+Devrient
Rivian selected Germany’s Giesecke+Devrient for automotive-grade eSIM hardware. G+D also provides the remote management infrastructure.
G+D says the approach allows a single global hardware SKU while keeping secure remote control over connectivity. Rivian pairs this with other manufacturing improvements.
Model details and rollout
The R2 goes on sale in the U.S. this spring. The entry price for the announced top trim is $59,485.
The top-spec R2 Performance AWD uses an 87.9-kWh battery. EPA estimated range is 330 miles, with 656 horsepower and 609 lb-ft of torque.
Lower-cost trims will follow later this year and into next year. European deliveries are expected to begin next year.
Strategic benefits
Exporting vehicles from the U.S. can raise logistical costs. Standardizing hardware offsets some export expenses.
The combination of standardized hardware and remote software control forms an innovative cost-cutting strategy. Rivian can stay competitive in Europe and Asia without sacrificing key features.
