Chris Young Discusses Rangers’ Roster Moves and Camp Atmosphere

In Surprise, Ariz., Rangers President of Baseball Operations Chris Young met with reporters during the final week of spring training. He delivered an update on health, roster decisions and spring projects.

Health and clubhouse mood

Young said most key players are healthy or trending toward opening day readiness. He praised the clubhouse energy and work ethic.

The camp atmosphere, he added, has been lively and focused. The staff highlighted strong communication from manager Skip Schumaker and his coaches.

Offensive approach and walk totals

The Rangers have led the majors in walks during spring training. Young credited improved plate discipline and a consistent team approach at the plate.

He singled out hitting contributors such as Justin Viele and Alex Cintron for their roles in that development. The organization stressed quality at-bats over raw performance numbers.

Rotation decisions and depth

Texas is weighing options for the fifth starter spot. Jacob Latz and Kumar Rocker remain strong internal candidates.

Other arms in consideration include Cal Quantrill and Austin Gomber, both of whom had encouraging recent outings. Young emphasized preservation of pitching depth and matchup-driven choices.

Rocker and bullpen flexibility

Young reiterated that Kumar Rocker is viewed primarily as a starter. He did not completely rule out creative early-season uses, including piggybacking out of the bullpen.

The front office will meet with coaching staff to evaluate multiple scenarios. Roster spot availability will limit how many deserving pitchers can stay on the big-league roster.

Season outlook compared to last year

Young said he feels better about the club’s offensive performance than at this point last year. He praised how new additions have integrated personally and professionally.

He cautioned about a difficult early schedule and the need to respond to adversity. Still, optimism remains high for the upcoming season.
