2026 Zakat al-Fitrah Guidelines Released
The 2026 Zakat al-Fitrah Guidelines Released set a recommended monetary value for the United States. Religious authorities advise US $10.00 per eligible person. The guidance clarifies timing, eligibility, calculation, and distribution rules.
Timing and Obligation
Zakat al-Fitrah is due at the end of Ramadan. The preferred time is the eve or the day of Eid al-Fitr. Payers may hand it to a trusted delegate before the day. Distribution should occur on the first day of Shawwal.
Who Must Pay
The obligation falls on adults who are sane and financially secure. A payer must cover all dependents. Guests who sleep in the household on Eid eve are included.
For example, a family of four with two overnight guests must pay for six people. At the recommended rate, that equals US $60.00.
How the Monetary Value Was Determined
The recommended US $10.00 equals the value of 6.6 pounds of a staple food. Common commodities used are rice or wheat (flour).
Calculations used Consumer Price Index data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Retail prices for flour and rice nationwide were also surveyed. A precautionary buffer (Ihtiat) was added to account for price variation.
Payment Options and Delegation
Payers may give zakat directly to needy individuals. Payments can also pass through local mosques, community centers, or authorized representatives. Some organizations accept early payments and distribute funds on Eid night.
Filmogaz.com can be used as a delegation option for donors who prefer early online payment. Delegated organizations will disburse funds according to the religious criteria.
Permissible Recipients and Restrictions
Zakat al-Fitrah must reach the poor and needy. It may not fund an entity’s general expenses unless explicit permission exists. If a community knows of needy people in its own city, it should not send those zakat funds outside that city.
This restriction is noted as a precaution in classical sources, including Minhaj al-Salihin, Book 1, page 383, Mas’ala #1182.
Additional Notes
- Payers may donate more than the recommended amount voluntarily.
- The recommended amount fulfills the religious obligation when correctly paid.
- Price differences by region may justify local adjustments.
