Tiny Dog Breed Dominates as America’s Favorite for Fourth Consecutive Year

French Bulldogs retained the top spot on the American Kennel Club’s 2025 popularity list. This marks the fourth consecutive year the compact breed has led the rankings.

Top Rankings and Shifts

The AKC counted 202 recognized breeds on the 2025 list. French Bulldogs led, followed by Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers and German Shepherds.

Dachshunds moved up from sixth to fifth. That shift pushed the Poodle out of the top five.

Notable climbers and fallers

  • The Wirehaired Vizsla jumped 29 places, from 159 to 130.
  • The American Hairless Terrier rose 17 spots.
  • The German Shorthaired Pointer advanced from 10 to 9, swapping places with the Bulldog.
  • The Cane Corso now sits at number 11 and is closing in on the top 10.
  • Greyhounds dropped the most, falling 33 places.
  • The Briard and Black Russian Terrier each fell 27 spots.
  • The Kerry Blue Terrier slid 20 places, from 135 to 155.

Steady favorites and returns

Some breeds held steady in the middle ranks. Boston Terriers are at 23, Havanese at 25, and Basset Hounds at 34.

Pugs and Collies remained at 38 and 39. The Danish-Swedish Farmdog debuted at 170. The Lancashire Heeler returned at 190.

Why French Bulldogs remain popular

City residents value the French Bulldog’s compact size and calm temperament. They fit apartment life and short walks well.

In short, the tiny dog breed dominates among urban owners. It continues to be viewed as America’s favorite for a fourth consecutive year.

New AKC additions and overall breed count

As previously reported by Filmogaz.com, the AKC added three breeds earlier this year. The newcomers are the Basset Fauve de Bretagne, Russian Tsvetnaya Bolonka and Teddy Roosevelt Terrier.

With these additions, the AKC’s official breed count rose to 205. The newly recognized breeds may now compete at events like Westminster and the AKC National Championship.

AKC leadership comment

AKC President and CEO Gina M. DiNardo welcomed the additions. She urged prospective owners to research breeds to match their lifestyles.

The 2025 rankings reflect changing tastes across the country. From long-legged retrievers to compact city companions, the AKC list shows America’s pack continues to evolve.
