Seventeen years after the accident, Natasha Richardson remains a figure of public memory. Her death followed a ski fall at Mont Tremblant, Quebec. The family trip turned tragic in March 2009.

Accident and emergency response

On March 16, 2009, Richardson fell during a private ski lesson. The fall occurred on a beginner’s run at Station Mont Tremblant. She was not wearing a helmet.

Ski patrol examined her on site. The first call to paramedics came at 12:43 p.m. An ambulance arrived at about 1:00 p.m.

She was taken to a small clinic and signed a release waiver at 1:10 p.m. She walked back to her hotel and arrived at 1:30 p.m. Symptoms worsened later that afternoon.

A second call to emergency services was placed at 2:59 p.m. An ambulance arrived about ten minutes later. She was taken to Centre Hospitalier Laurentien in Ste-Agathe.

That evening she was transferred to Hôpital du Sacré-Cœur in Montreal at roughly 7:00 p.m. The next day she was flown to Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City for further care.

Medical findings and cause of death

An autopsy in New York City found an epidural hematoma. The injury stemmed from blunt trauma to the temporal bone. Bleeding from the middle meningeal artery caused rising pressure on the brain.

Doctors described a lucid interval after the fall. Symptoms then progressed over several hours. Untreated bleeding ultimately led to brain death.

Richardson died on March 18, 2009, at age 45. Family members were at her bedside in New York.

She was married to actor Liam Neeson. They wed on July 3, 1994, in Millbrook, New York. The couple had two sons, Michaél and Daniel.
