Lions Sign Kalif Raymond, Strengthening Ties with New Coach
Filmogaz.com reports the Detroit Lions have agreed to a one-year contract with former Arizona Cardinals receiver Greg Dortch. The move follows Kalif Raymond’s exit to the Chicago Bears after five seasons in Detroit.
Background and coaching connection
Dortch spent five seasons with the Cardinals. He worked under Drew Petzing, who is now Detroit’s offensive coordinator.
He is an undersized gadget player. His familiarity with Petzing’s play designs makes him an ideal fit.
Career path and role
Dortch entered the league as an undrafted free agent. He bounced among four teams via waivers and practice squads early in his career.
He eventually carved out a role in Arizona. Dortch has been a reserve receiver and a key special teams contributor.
Production and return value
Over the last four seasons, he appeared in 61 games and started 15. He posted at least 24 catches and 200 receiving yards in each of those years.
His best receiving season came in 2022, when he totaled 52 receptions for 467 yards. As a returner, he has been consistently involved.
- At least 16 punt returns in each of the past four seasons.
- Last season: 31 kickoff returns for 811 yards and a 26.2-yard average.
- That average ranked 15th among returners with 22+ returns, and slightly above the 25.9 league average.
Expected role in Detroit
The Lions sign Dortch to help replace the departed Kalif Raymond as a space player. Dortch offers explosiveness and return expertise similar to Raymond.
He is expected to compete with Dominic Lovett for the WR4 spot and a return specialist role. The addition also furthers strengthening ties with the new coach on Detroit’s offensive staff, given Dortch’s work history with Petzing.
