Colts Sign Veteran Linebacker Familiar with Coordinator Lou Anarumo
The Indianapolis Colts have added veteran linebacker Akeem Davis-Gaither to their roster. The move brings starting experience to a linebacker group in transition.
Davis-Gaither spent last season with the Arizona Cardinals. He started 13 games in his lone year in Arizona.
Background and connection to the staff
Before Arizona, Davis-Gaither spent five seasons in Cincinnati. He was a rotational linebacker there while Lou Anarumo served as the defensive coordinator. The Colts are therefore signing a veteran linebacker familiar with coordinator Lou Anarumo.
Statistical snapshot
Last season with the Cardinals, Davis-Gaither recorded 117 tackles. Reports noted he struggled in pass coverage during that campaign.
Why Indianapolis acted
The Colts moved on from longtime middle linebacker Zaire Franklin this offseason. Franklin was traded to the Green Bay Packers. The team also has not re-signed veteran weak-side linebacker Germaine Pratt.
Those departures left limited experience at linebacker. Adding Davis-Gaither addresses that shortfall while the roster remains fluid.
Outlook
Indianapolis is expected to continue shaping its linebacker room. More moves at the position are likely before the season begins.
