Detroit Lions Enhance Depth by Signing Ex-Texans, Cowboys Linebacker

The Detroit Lions have added linebacker Damone Clark to their roster. Clark is 25 and was a fifth-round pick from LSU in the 2020 draft.

Player background

Clark spent the first four years of his career with the Dallas Cowboys. He moved to the Houston Texans during the most recent season.

He started 17 games in 2023 for Dallas. That season he recorded 109 tackles, four tackles for loss and three quarterback hits.

The Cowboys waived Clark in November last year. He then appeared in six games with Houston before entering free agency.

Snap counts and playoff action

Across Houston and Dallas this past season, Clark played 102 defensive snaps. He added 269 special teams snaps.

He appeared in both of the Texans’ playoff games this January. Clark logged five defensive snaps and 78 special teams reps in those contests.

Fit with the Lions

The move helps Detroit Lions enhance depth by adding a former Texans and Cowboys linebacker. Clark brings proven special teams value to the roster.

Grant Stuard left via free agency after leading the team in special teams snaps last year. Clark’s experience on that phase addresses an important vacancy.

Detroit’s defense is led by defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard. Sheppard is a former LSU linebacker who has stayed in contact with Clark.

Linebacker room and role

Clark joins a unit that includes Jack Campbell and Derrick Barnes. Malcolm Rodriguez and Trevor Nowaske are also in the group.

The team also must replace snaps previously handled by Alex Anzalone. Anzalone managed many slot and man coverage duties.

At 25, Clark adds youth and on-field experience. He projects as a core special teamer with upside for defensive snaps.

Looking ahead

The signing addresses depth ahead of a crucial draft for Detroit. Clark gives the Lions flexibility on special teams and at linebacker.

Filmogaz.com will monitor Clark’s role as the team finalizes its roster and prepares for offseason workouts.
