Bob Motzko Steps Down as Gopher Men’s Ice Hockey Coach, Sources Confirm
Sources confirm that Bob Motzko has stepped down as the Gopher men’s ice hockey coach. The University of Minnesota and Motzko agreed to part ways, the school said.
Tenure and accomplishments
Motzko spent eight seasons leading the men’s program. He compiled a 161-82-21 record over his first seven seasons, a .650 winning percentage.
He guided the team to consecutive NCAA Frozen Four appearances in 2021-22 and 2022-23. The Gophers finished as national runner-up in 2023.
2025-26 season and recent performance
This past season marked Motzko’s first with a losing record at Minnesota. The Gophers went 11-22-3 overall, a .347 mark.
In Big Ten play they went 7-15-2, a .333 conference record. The downturn followed several highly successful campaigns.

Related coaching change
The athletic department also announced changes in the women’s program this week. Women’s coach Brad Frost was relieved of his duties on Tuesday after a program review.
Athletic Director Mark Coyle said the review looked at both on-ice results and broader program elements. He added the department expects to compete at the highest level across all facets of women’s college hockey.
Women’s team finish
The women’s squad ended its season with a loss to Northeastern in the NCAA quarterfinals. That result factored into the review and subsequent decision.
