Flick Declares Barcelona Role as His Final Football Position

Hansi Flick has suggested his time at Barcelona will probably be his last role in football. He made the comment ahead of the UEFA Champions League round-of-16 second leg against Newcastle United. The game will be shown live on TNT Sports and discovery+.

Contract and club plans

Barcelona president Joan Laporta has signalled a desire to extend Flick’s deal until 2028. Flick’s current contract runs until next year. Laporta said the club wants stability and will announce terms soon.

Laporta added that Flick is happy in the city and has energy for the job. The president said a longer deal would underline Barca’s competitive momentum.

Flick’s comment on his future

Flick told TNT Sports that the season remains the immediate focus. He said discussions about an extension can wait until the campaign ends.

He also stated he is very content in Barcelona. Flick said his Barcelona role could serve as his final position in football.

Coaching résumé

Flick arrived at Barcelona in the summer of 2024. He delivered a domestic treble in his first season in Spain.

Previously, Flick managed Bayern Munich between 2019 and 2021. He won the Champions League in his first campaign there. He then led the German national team until 2023. That spell ended after Germany’s group-stage exit at the 2022 World Cup.

Champions League tie with Newcastle

The two clubs drew 1-1 at St James’ Park in the first leg. Harvey Barnes scored in the 86th minute for Newcastle. Lamine Yamal converted a 96th-minute penalty to level the tie.

The penalty followed a foul on Dani Olmo by Malick Thiaw. Flick described that late equaliser as important. He added the tie remains open for the return leg.

Opposition assessment

Flick praised Newcastle’s defensive organisation and physicality. He said they press man-for-man and defend well in the final third. Finding space and tactical solutions will be key for Barcelona.

Both teams arrived in good form. Barcelona beat Sevilla 5-2 domestically. Newcastle won 1-0 at Chelsea on the weekend.
