Michigan Conducts Statewide Tornado Drill Today

State emergency officials are asking residents to review tornado plans and take part in a statewide tornado drill at 1 p.m. today. The voluntary exercise is part of Severe Weather Awareness Week, running March 15 through 21.

Drill details and alerts

Participants may hear test alerts on television and radio. Some communities will also activate outdoor sirens if local emergency management joins the drill.

Organizers stress that the exercise is voluntary. It gives households a chance to test communications and response actions.

Why the exercise is urgent

Recent deadly storms have increased concern across the state. Four tornadoes struck Branch, Calhoun, Cass, and St. Joseph counties on March 6.

The March 6 events killed four people and caused many injuries. Dozens of homes and businesses were damaged or destroyed.

The National Weather Service recorded 33 confirmed tornadoes in Michigan during the 2025 season. Officials say the drill helps sharpen public readiness.

Messages from state leaders

Governor Gretchen Whitmer urged residents to make plans, assemble emergency kits, and sign up for local alerts. Michigan State Police Director Col. James F. Grady II highlighted the need to prepare now.

Authorities remind the public that tornadoes can occur with little or no warning. Average warning lead time is about 10 to 15 minutes.

How to prepare for a tornado

  • Understand alerts: a WATCH means conditions are favorable; a WARNING means a tornado has been sighted or detected on radar.
  • Know the signs: a greenish or very dark sky, large hail, a low-lying cloud, or a loud roaring sound.
  • Keep tuned to commercial radio or television for updates during severe weather.
  • Create an emergency kit with at least three days of water and food, a NOAA Weather Radio, and important documents.
  • Include supplies for children, elders, pets, and unique family needs.
  • Identify a safe interior room or basement where family members and pets can shelter.
  • Contact your local emergency manager to learn whether they will participate in the statewide tornado drill.
