Primark Implements Major Changes Impacting All Store Employees Soon
Primark will raise shop-floor pay from April 1 for around 27,000 staff across its UK stores. The retailer confirmed minimum hourly rates will increase across Great Britain.
New hourly rates
From April, hourly pay for shop floor colleagues will be at least £13 across England, Scotland and Wales. London-based staff will receive £13.71 per hour.
The changes affect roughly 190 UK stores and about 27,000 employees. Primark said many colleagues have seen pay rise by more than 15% over three years.
Staff benefits and support
Employees will keep a 15% year-round discount. They will also retain a package of family benefits.
Those benefits include enhanced payments for maternity, paternity, adoption and surrogacy. The company said the package covers retail and warehouse workers.
Company comments
Kari Rodgers, Primark’s UK retail director, framed the move as recognition of increased workplace demands. She highlighted colleagues’ role supporting customers and local communities.
The retailer described the raise as part of wider investment in its workforce.
Context in the retail sector
The rise comes ahead of national wage increases set for April. Other major retailers have also announced pay boosts for shop staff.
Marks & Spencer confirmed a pay increase of at least 6.4% from April 1 for its shop workers. Aldi revealed plans to raise starting rates and to increase them further with service.
