Former Tory MP Crispin Blunt Charged with Class A Drug Possession
Former Tory MP Crispin Blunt, 65, has been charged with four drug offences by the Crown Prosecution Service. He represented Reigate for more than 25 years.
The prosecution lists one count of possessing a Class A drug. It also lists three counts of possessing Class B drugs.
Charges and alleged substances
The Class A drug is alleged to be methamphetamine. The Class B allegations relate to GBL, cannabis and amphetamine.
The case concerns allegations of Class A drug possession alongside the Class B claims. Prosecutors say the evidence supports bringing the matter to court.
Investigation and court date
Police attended his home in Horley on October 25, 2023. That visit was made during a separate inquiry.
The CPS said it worked closely with Surrey Police while reviewing the material. Mr Blunt is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on March 25.
Statements from the prosecution
Malcolm McHaffie, head of the CPS Special Crime Division, confirmed the decision to charge. He said prosecutors had determined there is sufficient evidence and that prosecution is in the public interest.
The CPS emphasised the defendant’s right to a fair trial. It warned against reporting or online commentary that could prejudice proceedings.
Political career
Mr Blunt was elected Conservative MP for Reigate in 1997. He lost the Tory whip after his arrest in October 2023.
He continued to sit as an independent and did not stand in the 2024 general election. He served as parliamentary under-secretary at the Ministry of Justice for prisons and probation from 2010 to 2012 under David Cameron.
He also chaired the Commons Foreign Affairs Select Committee from 2015 to 2017. His long parliamentary career covered both ministerial and select committee roles.
Legal context
Criminal proceedings are active and the CPS asked for careful, responsible reporting. Authorities stressed that online sharing should not affect the court process.
