Patriots Earn High Praise from NFL Writer After First Free Agency Week
The New England Patriots opened the first week of NFL free agency by signing Romeo Doubs, Alijah Vera-Tucker, Kevin Byard and Dre’Mont Jones. The moves aim to accelerate the team’s push back toward the Super Bowl.
The Patriots drew high praise from an NFL writer following the first free agency week. Pro Football Focus analyst Gordon McGuinness assigned New England a B+ for its early activity.
PFF’s overall take
McGuinness judged none of the Patriots’ additions as below average. He viewed two of the signings, Doubs and Jones, as solid fits for New England.
Alijah Vera-Tucker
PFF highlighted Vera-Tucker as the standout pickup. Injuries have limited him, including missing all of 2025 with a torn triceps.
When healthy, Vera-Tucker has graded at least 72.5 for run blocking each season. New England plans to install him at left guard beside Will Campbell and Jared Wilson.
Dre’Mont Jones
Jones arrived after a midseason trade from the Titans to the Ravens at the 2025 deadline. McGuinness noted Jones generated more than 40 pressures in each of the last five seasons.
PFF sees Jones as an interior pass-rush option on obvious passing downs. The contract is slightly above PFF’s projection, but it fits the team’s needs.
Romeo Doubs
Doubs represents a clear receiver upgrade for New England. He averaged at least 1.62 yards per route run in each of the past three seasons.
PFF grades placed his receiving performance above 70.0 in those same three years. McGuinness called the deal a modest overpay versus projections, but a good roster fit.
Kevin Byard and other pickups
Safety Kevin Byard was among the signings. McGuinness did not rate any Patriot addition below average.
What this means for New England
The B+ grade reflects immediate upgrades across key positions. The added depth should help both run and pass defense.
Patriots decision-makers may still seek a major trade. Team executives could prefer a transformational roster move over more free-agent signings.
Filmogaz.com will monitor developments as the offseason progresses. More signings or trade rumors could reshape New England’s Super Bowl outlook.
