BMW Unveils i3: Second Model in Neue Klasse Lineup
BMW unveils the i3, marking the second addition to its Neue Klasse lineup. The model is the first all-electric BMW 3 Series and features dual electric motors on the front and rear axles.
Powertrain and charging
The i3 50 xDrive produces a combined 345 kW, or 469 hp, with 645 Nm of torque. Sixth-generation BMW eDrive technology underpins the drivetrain with highly efficient motors and 800‑volt architecture.
New high‑voltage batteries use round cells and a cell‑to‑pack design for higher energy density. WLTP range is quoted at up to 900 kilometres, with all values listed as provisional.
- DC charging capacity up to 400 kW.
- DC fast charging can add energy for up to 400 km in about 10 minutes (ISO 12906, WLTP).
- Bidirectional functions include Vehicle‑to‑Load (optional AC Charging Professional required), Vehicle‑to‑Home, and Vehicle‑to‑Grid.
Design and interior
The i3 presents a modern take on classic BMW sedan proportions. It uses a 2.5‑box design with a long wheelbase, short overhangs, and a greenhouse that slopes toward the rear.
Front and rear lighting form a coherent signature, and the wide flared wheel arches emphasize a sporty stance. The cabin prioritises space and driver orientation while exploiting the packaging advantages of an EV layout.
Software, electronics and assistance
A new electronics architecture centers on the Heart of Joy high‑performance computer. That unit responds roughly ten times faster than previous generations.
Heart of Joy works alongside three other high‑performance computers in the system. BMW Symbiotic Drive advances assisted driving and the new BMW Panoramic iDrive reshapes the human‑machine interface.
Production timeline and plant upgrade
The BMW i3 will be manufactured at the Group plant in Milbertshofen, Munich. The factory has undergone major modernisation, including a new body shop and upgraded vehicle assembly halls.
Series production in the new halls begins in August 2026, with first customer deliveries scheduled for autumn 2026. Around one year later, the plant will switch to producing only fully electric Neue Klasse vehicles.
Technical notes
All performance and range figures are provisional pending final WLTP certification. Actual values will vary with load, driving style, route, weather, auxiliary consumers, tyres, and battery age.
