Electric BMW 3 Series Debuts with Impressive 559-Mile Range
BMW has unveiled a new electric BMW 3 Series that pairs long-range claims with rapid charging. The model reportedly offers an impressive 559-mile range and rapid top-up capability.
Powertrain and performance
The car uses two electric motors. A rear electrically excited synchronous unit produces 322 bhp.
The front houses a 165 bhp asynchronous motor. Combined output is 463 bhp and 476 lb ft of torque.
BMW expects a 0-62 mph time close to four seconds. The curb weight is about 2.3 tonnes.
Charging and real-world range
DC charging reaches a maximum of 400 kW. At that rate, a 249-mile top-up takes roughly 10 minutes.
AC charging is limited to 22 kW. That supports slower overnight replenishment.
Chassis, handling and layout
The new model shares its basic platform with the iX3. Engineers say there are clear technical differences.
Suspension tuning uses softer springs and reduced top-mount bushing stiffness. Different anti-roll bars reduce yaw and roll inertia.
Those changes improve rolling behaviour and comfort, engineers told Filmogaz.com. Steering ratio is quicker and aerodynamics are refined for high-speed stability.
The car maintains a 50:50 front-to-rear weight distribution, matching the SUV version.
Size and styling
Dimensions measure 4.76 m long, 1.87 m wide and 1.48 m tall. It is larger overall than the current ICE 3 Series.
Design retains classic BMW sedan proportions, with a long body and short overhangs. Oliver Heilmer, BMW’s compact car design chief, discussed this with Filmogaz.com.
