Bridlington Driver Jailed Over Filey Overtake Leaves Motorcyclist Paralyzed

A driver from bridlington has been jailed for two-and-a-half years after an overtaking manoeuvre on the A165 in Filey left a motorcyclist paralysed, severely burned and bereft of a limb. The sentence follows a guilty plea to causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

Court Findings and Sentence

The court heard that the crash occurred on 25 June 2024 when the driver performed a “highly dangerous manoeuvre” while driving in foggy conditions with visibility of 20 metres on the A165 Hunmanby Road in Filey. The motorcyclist was thrown from his bike and was immediately engulfed in flames, the court was told.

After entering a guilty plea to causing serious injury by dangerous driving, the defendant was sentenced to two-and-a-half years in prison. The judge observed that young drivers must recognise the lethal potential of cars, a remark made as the sentence was passed.

Bridlington Man’s Background and Defence

The driver, aged 20, is from Bridlington and had only been driving for a few months when the collision occurred. He stopped at the scene and later attended questioning, after which he admitted the offence in court. Defence counsel described him as remorseful and said he was now suffering from depression and possibly post-traumatic stress disorder; the court was told he was undertaking an apprenticeship and had previously been described as courteous and hard-working.

Victim’s Injuries, Impact and Aftermath

The motorcyclist suffered catastrophic injuries. The court was told he was “effectively died three times” in hospital before being revived and sustained “horrendous” burns to both legs, his buttocks, back, hand, lips, tongue, nose and eyes. The collision resulted in the loss of a leg and has left him an amputee living with chronic pain and ongoing medical needs.

In a victim impact statement read to the court, the injured man said the crash had “shattered” his life. He described a daily existence dominated by medical and mental-health appointments, physiotherapy, psychiatric care and visits from an occupational therapist, and said activities that once gave him independence and joy had been taken away.

Penalties, Licence Ban and Ongoing Consequences

Alongside the custodial term, the driver received a 39-month driving ban and was told he will serve less than half of his sentence in custody before being released on licence. The motorcyclist faces long-term rehabilitation and continuing medical support as he adapts to life as an amputee, the court record indicates.

The case concluded with a clear judicial admonition about the dangers of reckless driving. The outcome underscores the severe legal and human consequences that can follow a momentary decision behind the wheel, and leaves the injured rider confronting a prolonged recovery and a life profoundly altered by the collision.
