Wales World Cup Playoff Squad: Ashley Phillips Misses Out

Wales’ attempt to persuade Tottenham defender ashley phillips to switch international allegiance has failed for now, with the player omitted from the 26-man squad named for the World Cup play-off semi-final against Bosnia & Herzegovina on March 26. The Salford-born defender, whose mother is from Swansea, was not included in Craig Bellamy’s party for the crucial tie in Cardiff.

Ashley Phillips Misses Out On Wales Playoff Squad

Wales approached ashley phillips with a view to bringing him into the senior setup, but his name was absent from the squad selected for the semi-final. The defender was capped by Wales at under-16 level in 2021 before going on to make more than 30 appearances for England youth teams, and remains eligible for England at youth level while Wales pursued a senior switch.

The 20-year-old is a Tottenham player currently on loan at Stoke, where he has made over 70 appearances across two spells in the Sky Bet Championship. That loan experience and his dual national background underscored why Wales targeted him, but the immediate effort to secure his commitment did not result in selection for the March fixtures.

Squad Shape, Injuries And Other Call-Ups

The Wales squad announced for the play-off semi-final includes a quartet from Leeds United: Karl Darlow, Ethan Ampadu, Joe Rodon and Daniel James. Bolton midfielder Josh Sheehan is also part of the group called up for the decisive international fixtures.

Selection has been influenced by a string of injuries to senior players. Skipper Ben Davies suffered a broken ankle in January and faces the prospect of missing the World Cup should Wales qualify. Centre-back Chris Mepham and striker Kieffer Moore are absent from the squad with hamstring injuries. Meanwhile, goalkeeper Danny Ward returns after dislocating an elbow and spending months on the sidelines, and full-back Rhys Norrington-Davies and winger Rabbi Matondo have been recalled to the squad.

What The Play-Off Path Now Looks Like

Wales begin their play-off campaign with the semi-final at Cardiff City Stadium against Bosnia & Herzegovina. The winners of that tie will host either Italy or Northern Ireland in the play-off final, with a place at this summer’s World Cup in North America at stake. Wales are aiming to qualify for back-to-back World Cup tournaments for the first time in their history, having previously appeared at the finals in 1958 and 2022.

The omission of Ashley Phillips leaves Wales reliant on established senior options and the returning players named in the squad as Craig Bellamy prepares his team for two high-stakes matches that will determine whether the nation reaches the global tournament.
