Boston Airport Sees Hundreds Of Flights Canceled Or Delayed As East Coast Weather Hits

Boston Airport experienced widespread disruption Monday as weather along the East Coast and forecasts for strong winds in New England led to hundreds of flight cancellations and delays. Massport issued a weather advisory urging travelers to check with their airline before heading to the airport.

Delays and Cancellations at Boston Airport

Hundreds of flights at Logan International Airport were canceled or delayed Monday amid storm conditions affecting the East Coast and incoming strong winds expected to impact New England. Flight tracking data showed more than 270 cancellations and more than 300 delays at Logan as of Monday night. Travelers were advised to use the FlyLogan app to confirm individual flight status before arriving at the terminal.

Weather Warnings and Expected Conditions

Massport issued a weather advisory Monday warning of delays at Logan due to high winds and rain. The National Weather Service issued a high wind warning for Monday evening covering Eastern Massachusetts, including the Cape and Islands, and Rhode Island. The warning is in effect from 5: 00 pm ET Monday to 6: 00 am ET Tuesday, with predicted sustained wind speeds of 25 to 35 miles per hour and gusts up to 65 miles per hour — conditions described as capable of bringing down trees and power lines.

Airline Rebooking Policies and Traveler Options

Several carriers announced flexibility for passengers affected by the disruptions. JetBlue is allowing customers to rebook flights for travel through March 21 before the originally scheduled departure time and is offering refunds for canceled flights when the original travel was booked before Saturday, March 14. Delta will waive the fare difference for travelers who rebook on or before March 24 in the same cabin and will waive change fees for travel rescheduled beyond March 24, though a fare difference may apply for those later changes.

Southwest is permitting rebooking within 14 days of the original travel date without a change in airfare and said travelers may be eligible for refunds for unused tickets when the airline cancels or significantly delays a flight. American Airlines announced change-fee waivers regardless of fare class for rebookings that keep the same city pair; qualifying tickets must have been purchased by March 14, travel must be scheduled between March 15 and March 24, and changes must be booked by March 17.

Travelers seeking real-time status should check with their carrier and use the FlyLogan app; FlightAware tracked the scale of cancellations and delays at Logan as the storm impacted flights to Florida and the southeast as well as other routes along the East Coast.
