When Stacy Clyburn (Michelle Pfeiffer) brings her children and grandchildren from Manhattan to Montana, they gather in a hotel room to watch Preston’s favorite film: A River Runs Through It.
The 1992 Oscar-winning movie, directed by Redford and starring Brad Pitt, follows brothers who bond while fly-fishing on Montana’s Blackfoot River. In the series, the viewing becomes a cathartic moment. Stacy tells her grandchildren, “A river may run through it, but I’ve never actually gotten through it, ” and, when asked if it will be sad, replies, “It’s about fishing. He recalled being told, “If you can get us Robert Redford, we’ll greenlight the pilot. ” Sheridan met with Redford at Sundance; Redford agreed to play Dutton. When Sheridan relayed the news, the executive response shifted to, “We meant a Robert Redford type. ”
Yellowstone ultimately moved forward elsewhere with Kevin Costner in the lead. Even so, Redford’s Westerns — both those he directed and those he starred in — remained touchstones for Sheridan’s work, a lineage The Madison makes explicit with its on-screen homage.
