Saint Patrick’s Day Parade Incident

Louisville Metro Police were dispatched at around 4: 00 pm ET on a report of someone being struck by a vehicle near Bardstown Road and Grinstead Drive in the area of the St. Patrick’s Parade. Preliminary investigation revealed that a woman participating in the parade was walking alongside a float when, for an unknown reason, her foot got caught by the float. She then fell, became caught under the vehicle and was struck.

Emergency medical services transported the woman to UofL Hospital for treatment, where she was eventually pronounced dead. The woman was believed to be in her 50s.

Investigation and Official Response

LMPD’s Traffic Unit is leading the investigation into the crash. Authorities described the sequence as the parade float catching the participant’s foot and pulling her into harm’s way, but have not provided additional details about what caused the foot to be caught.

Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg posted condolences, writing: “I am so sorry to hear about the tragic accident that took a woman’s life at today’s Saint Patrick’s Day Parade. Please join Rachel and me in keeping her family and friends in your prayers. May her memory be a blessing. ”

The Hibernian Cultural and Charitable Association of Louisville, the parade organizers, said it is deeply saddened by the tragic accident and encouraged people to keep those impacted in their thoughts while respecting the privacy of the family.

Witnesses, Reaction and Community Impact

Thousands lined the streets on Bardstown Road watching floats and celebrating, with many unaware that the incident had occurred nearby. A vendor who was working a family food truck across the street described seeing EMS attending to someone; he initially did not think the situation was serious but said the news later hit him hard. “It does break my heart because that’s a person that lost their life… this is not news that we want to hear — as human beings, as vendors, as people, as partygoers, ” he said.

A longtime parade participant who was marching as a mascot said she had finished her part of the route when she noticed floats behind her had stopped moving and then learned from other participants that something had gone terribly wrong. She extended her sympathy to those directly affected by the incident, including people associated with the float involved.

Some parade attendees raised concerns about safety at large public gatherings and what measures might prevent similar tragedies in the future. Local officials have not announced any changes to parade procedures while the investigation continues.

The Traffic Unit’s probe remains active, and investigators have not released additional findings. Officials have asked the public to respect the privacy of the deceased and her family as the inquiry proceeds.
