Talankin used his moment to plead for civilians caught in conflicts. He spoke of places where “instead of shooting stars … they have shooting bombs and shooting drones, ” urging: “In the name of our future, in the name of all of our children, stop all of these wars now. ”

Backstage, Borenstein reflected on lessons drawn while collaborating with Russian colleagues, relaying their view that democratic backsliding can accelerate quickly elsewhere. He said they pushed back on comparisons by warning, “It’s actually happening quicker in America than it’s been happening in Russia. Trump is moving a lot quicker than Putin in his early years. ”

The win continues a recent run for critical films about Russia at the Oscars, following Navalny in 2023 and 20 Days in Mariupol in 2024. The prize last year went to No Other Land, an Israeli-Palestinian co-production about the destruction of a Palestinian community on the West Bank.

From School Videographer To Oscar Winner

Talankin’s ascent has been rapid and unlikely. Less than two years ago, he was an events coordinator and videographer at a primary school in Karabash, a heavily polluted industrial town in the Ural mountains. He had never been outside Russia before leaving the country in summer 2024 for his own safety after quietly standing up to President Vladimir Putin’s war machine.

In Los Angeles ahead of the ceremony, the 35-year-old—who goes by Pasha—soaked in the surreal turn in his life, snapping selfies with Hollywood stars including best actor contenders Leonardo Dicaprio and Ethan Hawke. With his characteristic deadpan humor, he even fixated on a practical question about the statuette’s heft; the Oscar weighs 3. 86kg.

That sardonic streak runs through the film itself. Borenstein said Pasha has used humor to cope with the pressures around him, noting that jokes have long helped people endure life under authoritarian systems.

Mr Nobody Against Putin: Inside The Film

Set against Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the documentary follows how Talankin was drawn into state propaganda through his school job. Once tasked with filming student performances and graduations, he found himself implementing Kremlin directives that injected patriotism, militarization, and duty into classrooms, including mandatory flag-raising ceremonies.

Talankin was instructed to record and submit proof that the school adhered to the new curriculum. He came to see his role as a kind of monitor over teachers: “Look, I’m here, I’ve got a camera, I’m filming, so you will say everything you are supposed to say, you will speak as instructed, you will use the material provided by the government. ”

The filmmakers’ work on mr nobody against putin blends this sobering reality with streaks of comedy as a coping mechanism, underscoring how ordinary people can be pulled into systems of indoctrination through small, cumulative acts. That tension—between everyday life and creeping complicity—ultimately resonated with Academy voters, sealing the film’s move from festival favorite to Oscar winner.
