Why Braveheart Still Matters: Awards, Cast And Filming Notes

Braveheart was an international hit and won five Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director honours for Mel Gibson. The film’s large ensemble included actors such as Angus Macfadyen, Catherine McCormack, James Cosmo, Brendan Gleeson, Brian Cox, David O’Hara, Tommy Flanagan and Peter Mullan, with additional cast members appearing in key roles.

Production took place from June to October 1994 on location in Scotland and Ireland. Scottish locations used in filming included Glen Nevis, Glen Coe, scenic views over Loch Leven and the Aonach Eagach ridge, while most battle scenes, including Stirling Bridge, were filmed in Ireland after the Irish government supplied 1, 600 army reserves as extras. At a previous event, Gibson said that while filming in Scotland had been “a fantastic experience”, the ground there was not firm enough for the big battle scenes.

Braveheart’s home-video and streaming history remains active: one write-up notes the film is available to stream on Disney+, while another notes it was listed in a free streamer’s “Leaving Soon” section and was available on demand in the U. S. with a free window ending at the close of that month. The film’s release also prompted a surge in tourism to Scotland and remains a touchstone in discussions of large-scale historical filmmaking.

Gibson previously returned to Scotland for a similar event in 2022 and visited a local restaurant after arriving at Glasgow airport; that trip was his first visit to Scotland since the film’s premiere at Stirling Castle in 1995.
