Sir Jim Ratcliffe Backs Carrick But Won’t Confirm Longer Stay
Sir Jim Ratcliffe said Michael Carrick was “doing an excellent job” but stopped short of endorsing an extension to his spell in charge. Ratcliffe refused to be drawn on Carrick’s future when asked in Shanghai before the Chinese Grand Prix, and noted the club is thinking about qualification for the Champions League with “still seven or eight games to go. ” He praised the work done but indicated no immediate decision has been made.
Carrick’s Response And On-Field Case For Permanence
Carrick, who was appointed head coach for the remainder of the season after Ruben Amorim’s sacking, has overseen a rise to third in the Premier League and a Champions League push. Since taking the role in January he has guided the team to seven wins in nine games. Across his two spells in charge, only Sven Goran Eriksson, Carlo Ancelotti and Manuel Pellegrini have bettered his run of six straight home wins at the start of their first Premier League job.
After the Villa victory Carrick said there was “not that much noise” around his position and that external commentary did not affect him. He confirmed he had spoken with chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox following the win but said his focus is on the next match and that “whatever’s going to happen is going happen. ” Captain Bruno Fernandes created United’s first two goals in the 3-1 win, a performance that strengthened the case Rooney has made for Carrick’s permanent appointment.
The club’s hierarchy has indicated it will assess all options before making a decision in the summer, leaving Carrick’s long-term status unresolved despite growing public endorsements and a strong run of results.
