Laurent Brossoit To Make First NHL Start In Two Years After Sharks Recall
Laurent Brossoit has been recalled to the NHL and is expected to make his first start with the San Jose Sharks in nearly two years after an injury to the team’s other goaltender.
Recall Follows Askarov Lower-Body Injury
The San Jose Sharks recalled goaltender Laurent Brossoit from their AHL affiliate on March 13 after Yaroslav Askarov sustained a lower-body injury while warming up for the morning skate on March 12. Askarov was unable to suit up for the Sharks’ 4-2 win over Boston the same day, and the team signed an emergency backup goaltender from the University of New Hampshire to serve as the backup for that game. Alex Nedeljkovic started that game and made 39 saves on 41 shots.
Early indications suggest Askarov’s injury is not believed to be serious, and he is officially listed day-to-day. The recall gives San Jose an experienced option in net while the status of the younger goaltender is monitored.
What The Sharks Are Getting: Brossoit’s Form And History
Brossoit has been a steady presence for the AHL San Jose Barracuda since joining the organization. He owns an 11-2-1 record with a. 915 save percentage and a goals-against average around 2. 48 with the Barracuda. The netminder was acquired by San Jose in a trade earlier in the season and was recalled on March 13 to provide NHL depth.
This expected start would be Brossoit’s first NHL start since April 18, 2024, when he was still with another club. He missed the entire 2024-25 season due to knee and hip ailments and has previously undergone hip surgery in 2022 along with multiple knee procedures. Since returning to play, he has been able to remain healthy at the AHL level and earned the call back to the NHL roster.
Brossoit’s NHL Experience And Immediate Schedule Impact
Brossoit brings prior NHL experience across multiple clubs, having appeared in 140 NHL games with a career save percentage near. 911 and a goals-against average around 2. 64. He was also part of a Stanley Cup-winning squad in 2022-23, making eight starts that season and posting a 5-2-0 record in those appearances.
San Jose’s next scheduled road game is against the Montreal Canadiens with puck drop at 7: 00 pm ET, followed by a matchup against the Ottawa Senators. Brossoit’s expected debut in net for the Sharks against the Senators on Sunday would mark his first appearance with the team since the trade and his first NHL start in nearly two full years. The recall gives the Sharks an experienced netminder for the immediate stretch while Askarov’s day-to-day status is reassessed.
For now, the team will monitor Askarov’s recovery timeline and lean on Brossoit’s recent AHL form and NHL experience to cover starts as needed.
