Porto Vs Moreirense: Farioli Downplays Seven-Point Lead and Names Rotated Starting XI
Porto Vs Moreirense is set for the 26th round of the league at the Dragão on Sunday, with FC Porto’s coach framing the fixture as another test in a congested season while making significant changes to his lineup.
Porto Vs Moreirense: Farioli Criticizes Calendar, Rejects Focus On Temporary Lead
Francesco Farioli highlighted the strain of competing on multiple fronts, saying the squad has managed quality and energy across three competitions in what had been expected to be a reconstruction season. He noted the team’s recent win in Stuttgart, a 2-1 result in the first leg of the Europa League round of 16 on Thursday, and underlined that Porto currently lead the league and are semifinalists in the national cup.
Farioli described the possibility of gaining a provisional seven-point advantage over the second-placed team as irrelevant to his focus, pointing to the broader issue of an overloaded calendar. He argued there is insufficient room in the schedule to recover postponed matches until the final week of the season and said the coaching staff will not expend energy on matters outside their control.
Speaking at the club’s training centre in Olival, Farioli also emphasized adaptation: the team must find the best responses each game requires as fixtures accumulate. He characterized himself as a more complete coach at this stage of his career while acknowledging room for further improvement. The coach confirmed that Luuk de Jong, Samu and Nehuén Pérez remain unavailable for the Sunday match.
Lineup, Squad Changes And Match Notes
Farioli made eight changes to the starting XI compared with the side that faced Stuttgart. The selected eleven for the home match were:
Diogo Costa; Martim Fernandes, Bednarek, Kiwior, Zaidu; Alan Varela, Victor Froholdt, Gabri Veiga; Pepê, Deniz Gul, Oskar Pietuszewski.
The bench included Cláudio Ramos, Dominik Prpic, Francisco Moura, Pablo Rosario, Seko Fofana, Rodrigo Mora, Borja Sainz, William Gomes and Terem Moffi. Alberto Costa is suspended for the fixture. Thiago Silva was not included in the squad after being excused from the game following the death of his mother.
Porto’s squad management also carries disciplinary notes: Gabri Veiga and William Gomes entered the matchday with four yellow cards, placing them at risk of suspension for the next league fixture.
Moreirense were named with a starting lineup and bench prepared for the trip to the Dragão. Their chosen eleven included André Ferreira in goal, a back four with Diogo Travassos, Maracás, Gilberto Batista and Francisco Domingues, a midfield with Rodrigo Alonso, Stjepanovic and Afonso Assis, and a front three of Kiko Bondoso, Alan and Landerson. Their substitutes list was also named for the matchday.
The game presents a continuity test for Porto’s rotation strategy as they balance domestic and European commitments, and it will be played on Sunday with the coach managing the squad through a period of fixture congestion.
