Onana’s Loan Woes Could Create £43 Million Transfer Problem For Manchester United
Andre Onana is on loan at Trabzonspor, but onana’s season in Turkey has been inconsistent and his future is shaping up as a potential transfer headache for Manchester United this summer.
Onana’s Form and Statistics
The 29-year-old goalkeeper has produced mixed performances since joining Trabzonspor. He has played 21 games since arriving in September and has recorded just one clean sheet in his last 14 Super Lig matches. Across those 21 appearances he has conceded 31 goals and kept four clean sheets in total, three of which came in 2025. Trabzonspor’s head coach has acknowledged that while Onana has done well in some matches, there have been occasions when he has not performed to the required standard. The Turkish club sit comfortably in third place and Onana’s immediate focus remains on helping them qualify for European competition.
Trabzonspor Interest and the Price Barrier
Trabzonspor want to keep the goalkeeper beyond his season-long loan, but the club faces a financial barrier. Trabzonspor vice president Zeyyat Kafkas said the price Manchester United are asking for is in the €45-50 million range. The same figure has been presented in pounds at around £40-43 million. Kafkas also said Onana’s preference is to continue playing for a club in Europe if not in England and that his family shares that view, but he noted that the club’s realities make the reported fee difficult to meet. He added that if circumstances change, the situation could change too.
What This Means For Manchester United
Onana’s trajectory at United had turned sharply before the loan: he spent most of pre-season injured, lost his place to Altay Bayindir and was given a short chance in a cup tie that fell short of expectations. Senne Lammens arrived and established himself as first choice by mid-September, and Onana was subsequently sent to Trabzonspor. Manchester United face a clear choice this summer: insist on the reported €45-50 million asking price and risk being unable to find a buyer, or lower the fee and accept a smaller incoming transfer sum while removing his wages from the wage bill. Observers note that United spent £18. 2 million to sign Lammens, and Onana is widely seen as having no future in the squad. If no club meets the asking price, the club could be left holding a high-earning player they are keen to move on.
For now, Onana remains on loan in Turkey, with Trabzonspor weighing their options and Manchester United preparing for a summer in which the goalkeeper’s future—sale, reduced fee, or return to Old Trafford—could become one of the club’s more awkward transfer questions.
