Mclaren Launches Investigation After Both Cars Fail To Start In China
mclaren has opened a joint investigation with Mercedes High Performance Powertrains after both of its cars suffered terminal faults that prevented Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri from starting the Chinese Grand Prix. The double non-start came after the team had qualified on the third row, with Piastri fifth and Norris sixth.
Mclaren Launches Joint Investigation With Mercedes
The team has initiated a review with its engine supplier to determine why both machines were afflicted by electrical failures before the race even began. Norris was held in the garage as his crew worked on a problem while the rest of the field lined up on the grid, and Piastri’s car was returned to the garage prior to the formation lap and ultimately did not rejoin the race.
McLaren described the issues as separate problems on each car and said a joint investigation with Mercedes’ High Performance Powertrains operation would be launched to rule out a repeat.
Drivers Describe Separate Pre-Race Failures
Oscar Piastri said the problem that forced him out was an electrical fault on the power unit and stressed it was different from Norris’s issue. Piastri called the outcome “disappointing” and noted the team did not yet know more about the causes beyond that initial diagnosis. He added that the team planned to watch the race for learnings and do as much work as possible before Japan.
Lando Norris said there was not much he could share beyond an issue that prevented the car from starting. He said engineers were still investigating what was not working as it should and described the situation as frustrating after the effort put in by the whole team. The reigning World Champion said the team had to “take it on the chin, ” learn what went wrong and make sure it did not happen again.
Reliability Worries Shadow A Race Won By Mercedes
The double DNS for the team added to wider reliability concerns that affected multiple crews in Shanghai. A total of four cars failed to start the race, including an Audi and the Mercedes-powered Williams that suffered a hydraulic-system failure. Aston Martin also endured a double retirement: Lance Stroll stopped with a battery failure and Fernando Alonso was forced to stop because of discomfort from vibrations.
The race itself produced a first win for a young Mercedes driver, marking another dominant result for the works team. The victory extended Mercedes’ strong start to the season, with the winning driver joined on the podium by his teammate and a Ferrari driver in third.
For mclaren, the immediate focus is on the joint probe and on making sure the separate faults identified on each car are understood and fixed. The team has emphasized learning from the weekend while also pursuing performance gains ahead of the next scheduled event.
