F1 Live: Russell Wins Thrilling China Sprint From Leclerc And Hamilton
George Russell continued his 100% winning start to the 2026 season with a Sprint victory at the Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai, a race that featured a frenetic early tussle for the lead and a late Safety Car. This f1 live summary covers the finishing order and the key moments that decided the 19-lap Sprint.
F1 Live: Sprint Result And Key Placings
Russell converted pole into a Sprint win, finishing ahead of Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton after an opening exchange of positions with Hamilton and a decisive move at Turn 14 on Lap 5. The late Safety Car, called for a stranded Audi, prompted a flurry of pit activity that shuffled the running order.

- 2nd: Charles Leclerc (Ferrari)
- 3rd: Lewis Hamilton (Ferrari)
- 4th: Lando Norris (McLaren)

Following those positions, Pierre Gasly, Carlos Sainz, Gabriel Bortoleto and Franco Colapinto completed the classification, with Isack Hadjar, Alex Albon, Fernando Alonso, Lance Stroll and Sergio Perez also finishing. Nico Hulkenberg, Valtteri Bottas and Arvid Lindblad failed to finish.
How The Sprint Unfolded
Russell started from pole and initially held the lead through the opening corners, but Hamilton surged from fourth on the grid, demoting Antonelli off the line and passing Norris into Turn 1. Hamilton then took the lead with a move into Turn 9, only for Russell to fight back down the back straight into the Turn 14 hairpin.
The pair continued to swap places across the opening laps, which allowed Leclerc—who had started fourth—to move into contention. Russell made the decisive pass into the Turn 14 hairpin on Lap 5 to pull clear of Hamilton and Leclerc. A collision at Turn 4 involving Antonelli and Hadjar left Antonelli with a 10-second pit-lane penalty for the contact, and Antonelli had suffered a poor start from the front row.
A late Safety Car was required to retrieve a stricken Audi driven by Nico Hulkenberg. That caution triggered late pit stops; Hamilton was forced to stack behind Leclerc in the pits, which affected his recovery sequence. Some drivers who did not pit under the caution, including Lawson and Bearman, finished inside the points as a result.
Qualifying Pace, Team Notes And What Comes Next
Russell had taken pole for the Sprint and praised his Mercedes as a “joy to drive, ” with teammate Kimi Antonelli qualifying second, 0. 289 seconds down. Lando Norris was 0. 621 seconds back in third for McLaren, and only Hamilton and Oscar Piastri were within a second of Russell’s time in qualifying.
Ferrari tested a unique rotating rear wing concept but did not use it for qualifying. Practice and qualifying sessions showed Mercedes leading the field in pace, and the Sprint was followed by qualifying for the Grand Prix on Sunday.
The race weekend continues with the full Grand Prix weekend schedule, with teams and drivers set to regroup after the Sprint and prepare for the next session of on-track action.
